I biked from my condo in South Loop up to 3636 N Clark Ave. I arrived around 7:30 pm on Thursday, August 7th. Upon arrival, I locked by bike up outside of the Big Star. The bike post where I locked my bike already had a small bike locked up there and I added mine to the other side. I wrapped my cable lock through the post, my front tire and around my bike frame. I did not lock it up any different than I have in the past nearly three years I’ve lived in Chicago and have been locking up my bike around town. My friend and I then walked over to dinner. When we walked back, around 9:30 pm, my bike (and the other bike that was locked up on the same post) were gone. We stopped into the Big Star to ask the manager if they had noticed anything outside their restaurant as far as my missing bike was concerned. They did not recall and were not able to provide any security camera footage. The two patrons at the bar also did not remember seeing anything. The manager referred us to speak with the Hotel Zachary security, saying he thought they had the jurisdiction to the sidewalk. Hotel security was also unable to help, but told us to walk over to the police station to see if they could track down the bike with us, as I have an AirTag attached to it and saw the location of my bike being at the McDonald’s in River North. The police at the station in Wrigley told us to go to the McDonald’s and call 911 to get an officer to come retrieve it for us, since I had the location of the AirTag on it. We did so, but the police took an hour to show, in which the man who stole my bike had already left and seemingly had taken my bike to Clark/Lake stop and hopped on the Green line line with it out West. We waited over 30 mins at the McDonald’s before being kicked out of the building. By then the bike and stealer had fled so we left, more than 20 mins before police called me saying they had arrived. My bike had been all over Chicago(land)
