Incident Description:
I locked up the bike at the bike rack in the northwest corner of the Lincoln Park parking lot next to the Benjamin Franklin Monument. I spent about one hour at the farmer's market in the park and returned to the bike rack at 1:15 p.m. to lock up a friend's bike. My bicycle was still there at that time, and I noticed a man sitting on the cement berm near the bike rack, smoking. (I suspect now that he was waiting to see if anyone would come to claim the bike, and when we came and left, he knew it was safe to cut the lock--obviously, I didn't think of this at the time). My wife, friend, and I headed over to grab a drink at the Hotel Lincoln. When I returned to the rack around 3:15, my bike was gone, lock cut and left, though my wife and our friend's bike (which were both secured with a U-lock) were left untouched. Anyone reading this, I would suggest not using that bike ramp. In retrospect, I realize how sheltered it is from notice and how easy it is to steal a bike locked up there (a lesson underscored by the fact that mine was stolen within a two hour period in the middle of a Saturday with a number of random people using the park). Also, use U-locks as I should have!!!
