Chicago Stolen Bike Registry

I left the bike unlocked on a rack in the back of my moderately-sized apartment complex. The back area is locked from the street and only accessible to other residents, and the bike rack itself is not visible from the street. I normally lock the bike to the rack but neglected to this time. It was left unattended from Saturday afternoon to Monday afternoon when I discovered it missing.

Left bike at 9:30pm. Locked front wheel and frame to the bike rack. Came back at a little after midnight and the bike was gone. The cut lock was laying on the ground.

A neighbor about two houses down on our block reported that 3 boys, about ages 16 to 18 walked into our garage (which was left open), took the bike from off the ceiling-mounted hooks and left. He reported that the boy who took the bike was wearing a white shirt, and that the boys were smoking. Our garage opens into an alley behind Saint Louis Ave. This happened at about 5pm on Sunday, August 4th. There were also three young men who were nearby in a community garden behind our house who overheard us talking with our neighbor about the situation. They took down my phone number and I showed them pictures of the bike, and they said that if they saw the bike around, they would call and let me know. It seemed like they were different than the other three boys he described, as they all had their own bikes, and were trying to help us find the missing one... but who knows. Our neighbor said that the boys who took the bike might live a block or two south of us, but when they left with the bike, they walked north out of our alley toward Leland Ave. We then filed a police report over the phone about 10 minutes later.

I've kept my bike locked to itself through the back wheel (with a newish U lock) for several years, in my building's interior, locked courtyard. It had been locked for several days there, and I saw it last Thursday morning when leaving for work. It was gone when I took trash out late Thursday night. No sign of damage to the gate.

The bike was locked up outside the apartment building next to another bike. I believe that the person must have cut off the cable lock but there was no lock found after. Bike was last seen at 11:00 PM on Sunday Aug 4th and missing at 7:00 AM on Monday Aug 5th. The bike is in very good condition for being a vintage Schwinn. there are only some minor scratches and paint chips and still has the original foam on the handlebars.

My bike was propped up next to my grill in the courtyard area of my apartment complex. Both the grill and bike were covered by a grill cover but the bike was not locked to anything. Our courtyard area is secured by a gatem which is the only way in and out. I don't believe another resident stole the bike so somebody must have hoped the fence, taken the bike and walked out the gate.

I left my bike locked to visit the Lincoln Park Zoo for about an hour and a half and it was gone when I returned. My wife's bike that was locked to it was still there and our helmets were left there as well. They also stole the baby seat that was attached to the rear rack. Ed note- user selected U-lock as lock type but later offered: "We had a cable and u-lock. The cable was cut--the u-lock was still in tact."

The bike was hung up in a private, fenced in backyard in the Roscoe Village neighborhood.

I went to a Church retreat at St. Clements (642 W Deming Pl, Chicago, IL ‎) in Lincoln Park. I locked the bike to a pole/sign near the church around 7 PM. When I came out at 11 PM, my bike was gone. I looked around for it and came back the next day as well during daylight and couldn't find it.

Bike was locked on a street near but not too close to Lollapalooza, the bike was locked to a street sign post and it was also locked to another bike (Red 1986 Schwinn Le Tour Single Speed, Not Stolen) with two U-Locks and one kryptonite cable. The cable and smaller u-lock was cut/broken and the wheel was loosened to remove the frame and backwheel all that was left was the front wheel, the other bike, the larger u-lock and a cut cable.

Came down with the stomach flu and (stupidly) left my bike for at least a day overnight. Sadly, I'm not surprised that it's not there. Please help. I don't want to believe that I can't own a bike in this city.

Bike was in the back of my place of work, outside of an apartment. It wasn't locked because people from work are always outside. Someone stole it between 5pm and 11pm

I was inside skylark for a drink. Got there at 9. When I left at 11 the bike was gone. Lock was cut and left.

For the past month I had my bike inside my house, in my back porch. What I'm guessing happened is the door was unlocked or open and the thief came in that way. There was nothing of value in my porch, except for my bike.

I parked and locked the bike with 2 locks (U-lock and cable) to a bike rack in front of LA Fitness on a very busy corner @ Grand & McClurg in downtown Chicago. Other bikes were there, but they were older/crappier compared to mine. I should've known. I went to the movies, came out, the bike was gone, but the U-lock remained. Talked to the receptionist at LA Fitness who was useless, no surveillance camera. Same thing from the crabby security guard at the high-rise apartment building at the opposite entrance. His only "help" was to tell me, "Yeah, at least 3 bikes a week are stolen." Gee, thanks, jackass. God forbid you'd do anything, like post a sign that says, "DON'T LOCK YOUR BIKE HERE - IT'LL GET STOLEN!"
